The Somali government has stated that SSC-Khaatumo did not place any conditions on the release of the 25 prisoners.

Tuesday, April 15, 2025 (SDU) – The Minister of Justice of Somalia, Hassan Macallin, stated that the prisoners recently transferred to the Somali government from the SSC-Khaatumo administration are part of efforts to strengthen peace and understanding, and that they are paving the way for the exchange of prisoners between the two sides.

Hassan Macallin, speaking to the media in Mogadishu after 25 prisoners, who were soldiers from the Somaliland forces and captured during the recent battles in the Sool region, were brought there, emphasized that their release was non conditional.

The Minister highlighted that most of these prisoners are suffering from health issues and needed immediate medical care. He also praised the SSC-Khaatumo administration for the decision to transfer the prisoners, stating that this action demonstrates political maturity and sends a peace message that encourages dialogue and rapprochement.

Hassan Macallin mentioned that the Somali government is preparing a plan to transfer the prisoners it holds, so that Somaliland can also take similar steps and grant freedom to the prisoners from SSC-Khaatumo.

This is the first time since 2023 that the SSC-Khaatumo administration has officially transferred war prisoners, although there have been isolated cases in the past, such as when severely wounded prisoners were transferred by the ICRC to Hargeisa last year.
