Amid growing regional unrest, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has suspended flights to several cities in the Middle East and is making major operational changes in response to the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague.
CEO Marjan Rintel confirmed the move on Sunday, citing safety concerns and logistical challenges.
“We are extremely alert and will not compromise when it comes to safety,” Rintel said on Dutch TV program WNL op Zondag.
🚫 No Flights to Tel Aviv “Until Further Notice”
KLM has officially extended its suspension of flights to Tel Aviv, which was originally halted until July 1 following Israeli airstrikes on Iran. The airline now states that service to Israel will not resume “until further notice.”
In addition, KLM has paused operations to:
- Dubai (UAE)
- Riyadh (Saudi Arabia)
- Dammam (Saudi Arabia)
“We assess every day whether it’s safe and responsible to fly,” a KLM spokesperson said.
✈️ Flight Rerouting Causing Delays
As tensions escalate and certain airspace close, KLM has been forced to reroute aircraft, which has led to:
- Increased air traffic congestion
- Longer flight times
- The need for extra crew and fuel
KLM is working closely with the Dutch ministries of Defense and Interior to evaluate risks and adjust flight paths safely.
🇳🇱 NATO Summit Causing Disruption at Schiphol Airport
Adding to the challenge, the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague is expected to cause major disruption at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. KLM has been planning for months, but still anticipates a tough week.
Key impacts include:
- ❌ More than 20% of KLM flights canceled
- ⏰ 40% of flights rescheduled
- 👷 Increased ground operations, such as aircraft towing, handled by KLM teams
“We hope for good weather and favorable wind conditions so that the plans we’ve made can actually proceed,” said Rintel.
🧳 What Passengers Should Know
If you’re flying with KLM this week:
- Check your flight status frequently
- Expect delays or cancellations
- Allow extra time at the airport
KLM is contacting affected passengers directly and providing alternative travel options where possible.
